curated by Federica Chiocchetti
London Art Fair
20-24 January 2016

Taking its title – and, loosely, its inspiration – from Jean-Luc Godard’s 1966 film, Masculin Féminin, this year’s edition of Photo 50, the photographic curatorial showcase at the London Art Fair, seeks to “explore the challenge of representing the mysterious, at times ineffable and immaterial, dynamics that occur or do not occur between a woman and a man”. Playing to this gender binary might seem somewhat outdated and simplistic, but the works on display are provocative and cheeky, candid and compelling, saving what could be a clichéd presentation from falling at this first hurdle. Unusually for a female-curated exhibition looking at gender, men have not been excluded, and seven of the 18 artists on show are male. Divided into five sections, the works interrogate the feminine-masculine divide, by looking at emotional and behavioural responses to love, sex, lust and fantasy.
